NOTE TO TEACHERS: Watch your students!

Many students when trying the mini curl-up will lift their heads way too high or will try to look at their feet. The head should be just off the floor, the same height as the chest. So check to make sure they are not overdoing the head lift. You can suggest they imagine that their head and chest are one rigid unit moving together. If they find their neck is straining too much (because their neck muscles are weak or they are over-recruiting the sternocleidomastoid muscles), they can try touching their teeth together and strongly press their tongue to the roof of the mouth just behind the teeth; this should activate the digastric muscles, which McGill promises will stabilize the neck.765 Also, make sure their hands are under the low back, preserving their lordosis, and not under the pelvis; that would flatten the lower back. The one straight leg helps to keep the lumbar extended.
